Grace: The DNA of God
By: Tony Cooke
There is an old Dennis the Menace cartoon that wonderfully portrays grace. Dennis and his little buddy Joey are leaving the home of their kindly neighbor, Mrs. Wilson, cookies in hand. Joey asks Dennis, “I wonder what we did to deserve this?” Dennis then explains as only a child can. “Look Joey. Mrs. Wilson doesn’t give us the cookies because we’re nice, but because she’s nice.”
If we can understand that simple cartoon, then we have a good beginning in understanding God’s grace. The grace by which God saved us- which is even better than cookies- is based on His goodness, not on our performance or perfection. Our redemption was not an afterthought of God’s either! It was His plan from eternity past.
…God, who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began. 2 Timothy 1:8-9 (bold Tony Cooke)
All who dwell on the earth will worship him, … the lamb slain from the foundation of the world. Revelation 13:8 (bold Tony Cooke)
These scriptures reveal God’s everlasting love and desire for us, so we can know without a doubt that there was nothing accidental about the grace of God being expressed to us through the offering of His Son. He has done and continues to do all things with our highest good in His mind and heart.
